Crabs– the good kind

You never know what treasures you’ll find at Aldi’s. The other day we noticed they were selling frozen King Crab legs– $8.99 for a 16 oz package. Neither of us has ever prepared any kind of shellfish other than shrimp at home before, but for the price we decided to give it a shot.

Too easy. I just rinsed the frozen legs and chucked them in the steamer pot for 6-8 minutes while Vanessa melted and strained some butter for dipping, and we microwaved a couple of baking potatoes. Dinner was ready in less than 10 minutes, and it felt like we were eating from a gourmet restaurant. The crab was sweet and delicious. I didn’t realize that Vanessa had never had crab legs before– just crab cakes. I showed her how to pry the meat out of the shell (difficult when you are working with fondue forks and kitchen shears for lack of the proper equipment) and fed her the first bite. Her response? “That’s pure heaven! Why haven’t I had this before?” It was adorable. She was still talking about how good it is when we woke up this morning. I love getting to introduce her to something new. We’re heading back to Aldi’s this weekend before they run out of the crab. It’s a seasonal item, so we think that when it’s gone they won’t have it again for a while.

  1. Oh yeah! That was good stuff. Can’t wait to do it again.

And Friday night we had the $3 Meijer brand four cheese pizza with green peppers and hot peppers from our garden and green olives and onions. That was pretty darn good, too.

  2. Mmm– frozen pizza. Fine dining in Garfield Park.
